Lecture: Psychosocial Factors in Low Back Related Conditions

DOI 10.28962/01.3.059

Psychological factors are one of the major factors undermining the effectiveness of back pain treatment. This lecture looks at the role these factors play in the recovery of these patients from symptomatic low back pain. The application of the Biopsychosocial model to the management of back pain is discussed. This discussion is mainly focused around the so called yellow, orange, blue and black flags. Also the Waddell signs are discussed in detail. Various strategies have been suggested in identifying these cases with the help of various scoring and questionnaires such as STarT, Steven Linton and the Orebro. Finally, the principles of management in these difficult cases of chronic low back pain are outlined, in association with adverse psychological risk factors.
