Lecture: Spinal Tumours in Early Life

DOI 10.28962/01.3.128

In this lecture, epidemiology and principles of the managment of paediatric spinal tumours are introduced by world renowned expert Professor David A. Walker.

The lecture begins with a discussion of the incidence of childhood cancers in general before focusing on spinal tumours. The classification and presentation of tumours of the brain and spinal cord is covered. The lecture moves on to discuss the process of diagnosis which many patients go through and the problems relating to the time from symptom onset to diagnosis. The author then describes work that has been done to improve the symptom interval for patients – called the HEADSMART campaign. Finally, a number of clinical cases are presented and discussed with respect to delays in diagnosis.
