This lecture looks at the principles and indications for conservative treatment of thoracolumbar spine fractures, beginning with an explanation of the stability of spine fractures and the transmission of various forces through the intact spine. As the current classification systems incorporate the concept of stability, a detailed explanation of the current established AO classificaion version is included. The indications for conservative treatment are clarified, with emphasis on correct interpretation of the fracture type. Finally, the regimen of conservative treatment and the principles involved in the treatment are discussed.
